Lesson 15: Floating Paper Clips

DESCRIPTION
A careful technique is used to make a paper clip “float” on top of water.

OBJECTIVE
This lesson demonstrates a property of liquids known as surface tension and explains the difference between surface tension and buoyancy.

CONTENT TOPICS
Properties of matter; attractive forces (surface tension)

Lesson 15: Floating Paper Clips

HYPOTHESIS

A paper clip will sit on top of water because of the water’s surface tension. If you add soap, which is a surfactant, the paper clip will sink.
