Lesson 19: Hold The Salt

DESCRIPTION
Fresh, drinkable water is produced from a salt-water solution using the process of distillation.

OBJECTIVE
This lesson demonstrates the process of distillation and how it is used to separate substances in a solution.

LIST OF MATERIALS

  1. Large bowl
  2. Heavy glass cup (shorter than the bowl is deep)
  3. Teaspoon
  4. Clear plastic food wrap
  5. Any coin
  6. Clear cellophane tape
  7. Blue food coloring
  8. Salt

REVIEW GAME

HYPOTHESIS

Pure water will evaporate from the blue salt-water solution and condense on the plastic wrap above.
The droplets of pure water will then slide toward the center of the plastic wrap and drop into the cup.
