The process of chromatography is used to separate colors from black markers.

This lesson uses the process of chromatography to reveal the different colors that make up black ink.

  1. Three black markers (different types)
  2. Two glass or plastic containers
    (500 mL beaker)
  3. White coffee filters
  4. Two rulers
  5. Clear tape
  6. Water
  7. Isopropyl rubbing alcohol

HYPOTHESIS

Black ink is used on filter paper and then the filter paper is placed in water or alcohol, which causes the colors in the black ink to separate.
